Fake News Perception in Germany: A Representative Study of Peopleâs Attitudes and Approaches to Counteract Disinformation
Fake news has become an important topic in our social and political environment. While research is coming up for the U.S. and European countries, many aspects remain uncovered as long as existing work only marginally investigates peopleâs attitudes towards fake news. In this work, we present the results of a representative study (N=1023) in Germany asking participants about their attitudes towards fake news and approaches to counteract disinformation. More than 80% of the participants agree that fake news poses a threat. 78% see fake news as harming democracy. Even though about half of the respondents (48%) have noticed fake news, most participants stated to have never liked, shared or commented on fake news. Regarding demographic factors, our findings support the view of younger and relatively educated people being more informed about fake news. Concerning ideological motives, the evaluation suggests left-wing or liberal respondents to be more critical of fake news

Hidden Subluminous sd/wd among the FAUST UV sources toward OPHIUCHUS
A UV image in the direction of Ophiuchus, obtained with the FAUST instrument
is analysed. Suitable candidates as unrecognized subluminous stars are selected
comparing the observed UV flux to the predicted one. The uv-excess objects were
observed at the 1.0 m Wise telescope. This method yields to the detection of
eight broad Balmer lines objects. Six are classified as sds and two wds,
comparing the Hbeta line profile with that of stellar model atmospheres.Comment: 2 pages, including 2 figures. To appear in the Proceedings of the

On the Nature of the Apparent Ring Galaxy SDSS J075234.33+292049.8
(abridged) An object classified as a galaxy in on-line data bases and
revealed on sky survey images as a distant ring galaxy is a rare case of polar
ring galaxy where the ring is only slightly inclined to the equatorial plane of
the central body. SDSS imaging indicates that the diameter of the ring is about
36 kpc. The SDSS data was combined with long-slit spectroscopic observations
and with Fabry-Perot Interferometer H-beta mapping obtained at the Russian
Academy of Sciences 6-m telescope. We derived the complex morphologies of this
presumed ring galaxy from a combination of SDSS images and from the kinematical
behaviour of the central body and of the ring, and determined the stellar
population compositions of the two components from SDSS colours, spectroscopy,
and evolutionary stellar synthesis models. The ring metallicity is slightly
under-abundant. The total luminosity and the total mass of the system are not
extreme, but the rather high M/L~20 indicates the presence of large amounts of
dark matter. Two alternative explanations of this object are proposed (1) a
ring formed by two semi-circular and tight spiral arms at the end of a central
bar with a warp or precession of the ring material. The object could,
therefore, be explained as an extreme SBa(R) galaxy, or (2) a Polar Ring Galaxy
where the inner object is an S0 and the ring is significantly more luminous
than the central object. The compound object would then be similar to the NGC
4650A galaxy, being a rare object with a polar component only modestly inclined
to the equatorial plane of the central body. Arguments for (and against) both
explanations are given and discussed, with the second alternative being more
acceptable.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS in pres
The NGC 672 and NGC 784 Galaxy Groups: Evidence for Galaxy Formation and Growth Along a Nearby Dark Matter Filament
(Abridged): We present U, B, V, R, I, H-alpha and NUV photometry of 14
galaxies in the very local Universe (within 10 Mpc that are dwarf irregular
galaxies (dIrr), are at low redshift (51<v<610 km/s), and appear as a six
degree long linear filament.. We examine the star formation (SF) properties of
individual objects with the current SF rate (SFR) derived directly from the
H-alpha line flux and compare the multi-band photometry with results of galaxy
evolution assuming short SF bursts separated by long quiescence periods. Most
objects contain at least one "old" stellar population (>1-10 Gyr) and one
"young" population (<30 Myr) with the recent SF bursts occurring a few to a few
10s of Myr ago, arguing for synchronicity in star formation in these objects.
We propose that the ~synchronous star formation in all objects is caused by the
accretion of cold gas from intergalactic space onto dark matter haloes arranged
along a filament threading the void where these dwarf galaxies reside and point
out this galaxy sample as an ideal target to study hierarchical clustering and
galaxy formation among very nearby objects.Comment: 29 pages, five figures. MNRAS, in press. This version with no galaxy

A Spectroscopic Road Map for Cosmic Frontier: DESI, DESI-II, Stage-5
In this white paper, we present an experimental road map for spectroscopic
experiments beyond DESI. DESI will be a transformative cosmological survey in
the 2020s, mapping 40 million galaxies and quasars and capturing a significant
fraction of the available linear modes up to z=1.2. DESI-II will pilot
observations of galaxies both at much higher densities and extending to higher
redshifts. A Stage-5 experiment would build out those high-density and
high-redshift observations, mapping hundreds of millions of stars and galaxies
in three dimensions, to address the problems of inflation, dark energy, light
relativistic species, and dark matter. These spectroscopic data will also
complement the next generation of weak lensing, line intensity mapping and CMB
experiments and allow them to reach their full potential.Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 202

Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker initiation on organ support-free days in patients hospitalized with COVID-19
IMPORTANCE Overactivation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may contribute to poor clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19.
Objective To determine whether angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) initiation improves outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In an ongoing, adaptive platform randomized clinical trial, 721 critically ill and 58 nonâcritically ill hospitalized adults were randomized to receive an RAS inhibitor or control between March 16, 2021, and February 25, 2022, at 69 sites in 7 countries (final follow-up on June 1, 2022).
INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive open-label initiation of an ACE inhibitor (nâ=â257), ARB (nâ=â248), ARB in combination with DMX-200 (a chemokine receptor-2 inhibitor; nâ=â10), or no RAS inhibitor (control; nâ=â264) for up to 10 days.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was organ supportâfree days, a composite of hospital survival and days alive without cardiovascular or respiratory organ support through 21 days. The primary analysis was a bayesian cumulative logistic model. Odds ratios (ORs) greater than 1 represent improved outcomes.
RESULTS On February 25, 2022, enrollment was discontinued due to safety concerns. Among 679 critically ill patients with available primary outcome data, the median age was 56 years and 239 participants (35.2%) were women. Median (IQR) organ supportâfree days among critically ill patients was 10 (â1 to 16) in the ACE inhibitor group (nâ=â231), 8 (â1 to 17) in the ARB group (nâ=â217), and 12 (0 to 17) in the control group (nâ=â231) (median adjusted odds ratios of 0.77 [95% bayesian credible interval, 0.58-1.06] for improvement for ACE inhibitor and 0.76 [95% credible interval, 0.56-1.05] for ARB compared with control). The posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitors and ARBs worsened organ supportâfree days compared with control were 94.9% and 95.4%, respectively. Hospital survival occurred in 166 of 231 critically ill participants (71.9%) in the ACE inhibitor group, 152 of 217 (70.0%) in the ARB group, and 182 of 231 (78.8%) in the control group (posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitor and ARB worsened hospital survival compared with control were 95.3% and 98.1%, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this trial, among critically ill adults with COVID-19, initiation of an ACE inhibitor or ARB did not improve, and likely worsened, clinical outcomes.

FoxIT: Enhancing Mobile Users' Privacy Behavior by Increasing Knowledge and Awareness [to appear]
Albeit offering many benefits, smartphones can pose a severe privacy threat to users. While some users might simply be not aware of privacy issues, others are highly motivated to protect their data, but lack the ability and knowledge to do so. We developed an Android-based application called "FoxIT", which provides users with several education modules as well as a static smartphone and app permission analysis to increase both, privacy awareness and knowledge of mobile users. We conducted a first evaluation of FoxIT in a twoweek field study with 31 users and were able to show that use of FoxIT not only leads to increased privacy awareness, but also improves knowledge about privacy related topics. Participants alsoreported to have improved the privacy conditions on their smartphone, actively informed themselves about privacy related topics, and prompted others to protect their data after using FoxIT. Our results indicate that it might be a promising approach to improve mobile usersâ privacy behavior by raising awareness and providing background information about privacy related topics
DESI luminous red galaxy samples for cross-correlations
International audienceWe present two galaxy samples, selected from DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys (LS) DR9, with approximately 20,000 square degrees of coverage and spectroscopic redshift distributions designed for cross-correlations such as with CMB lensing, galaxy lensing, and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The first sample is identical to the DESI Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample, and the second sample is an extended LRG sample with 2-3 times the DESI LRG density. We present the improved photometric redshifts, tomographic binning and their spectroscopic redshift distributions and imaging systematics weights, and magnification bias coefficients. The catalogs and related data products will be made publicly available. The cosmological constraints using this sample and Planck lensing maps are presented in a companion paper. We also make public the new set of general-purpose photometric redshifts trained using DESI spectroscopic redshifts, which are used in this work, for all galaxies in LS DR9
